(Celestial Jazz) – $10

Nadje Noordhuis and James Shipp have been playing intimate duo concerts together since May of 2012. The blending of their warm and ringing sounds gives rise to a world of beauty, drama, exploration, and mystery. They play mostly original compositions, and the occasional well-loved rendition of a Finnish fiddle tune, an Egberto Gismonti gem, or song by a mutual friend. Australian-born, Brooklyn-based trumpeter and composer Nadje Noordhuis brings a classical music background to her lyrical jazz, which is flavored by diverse influences – from Irish folk melodies to rhythmic tangos. She was one of ten semi-finalists in the 2007 Thelonious Monk International Jazz Trumpet Competition and plays in numerous big bands including Darcy James Argue’s Grammy-nominated Secret Society. Originally from Columbia, Maryland, vibraphonist and composer James Shipp has played jazz both new and old, Brazilian music, and with many bands that blend genres and styles. He regularly performs with Jean Rohe and the End of the World Show, Kate McGarry, and works as a bandleader and workshop facilitator for Carnegie Hall’s Musical Connections program in the New York State Corrections and Juvenile Justice systems.
