While there are some much loved Advent hymns, most of them predate the three year lectionary that provides our readings for our modern Advent journey. In an effort to create hymns that connect to the imagery and language of the readings, I have written a new hymn lyric for each Sunday that uses a tune from the ELW. (See below)

This is part of a bigger effort that I am calling HYMN OF THE DAY PROJECT that seeks to create a lectionary-engaged hymn for most the Sunday’s (especially the ordinary ones) in a church year. I am beginning with Year B since that is the year that is about to begin.

I hope that are found helpful in your worship.

The Rev. Mark Erson, Pastor

Advent 1 – B

Stirring Savior, rending heavens
Comes the power of God to earth.
Bringing life where we see ruin
Conquering death with water’s birth.

Stirring Savior, acting ever
Freeing captives, mercy giv’n.
Form us as your will would have us,
Peace restored, by grace forgiv’n.

Stirring Savior, guiding shepherd
Steadfast love restoring life.
Shine your face and end our slumber
Turning sorrow, ending strife.

Stirring Savior, strength’ning always
For God’s work our hands are made
Fellowship is ours forever,
With your reign all sorrows fade.

(Tune:  Use ELW 455 – Crashing Waters at Creation)

Advent 2 – B

Cries are in the wilderness, heralds shout from mountains.
See your God is coming here, mercy flows like fountains.
Shepherd us, shepherd us, exiles seek your leading.
Tenderly you care for all, carrying and feeding.

Steadfast love is flowing forth, restoration bringing.
Making barren ground to bloom, pools of water springing.
Shepherd us, shepherd us, exiles seek your leading.
Tenderly you care for all, carrying and feeding.

Hear the word of God proclaimed, echo now its glory
Good news to our sinfulness, endless is God’s story.
Shepherd us, shepherd us, exiles seek your leading
Tenderly you care for all, carrying and feeding.

Jesus-washed and Spirit-filled, hope is ours while waiting
Journeying in faith and trust, God’s grace recreating
Shepherd us, shepherd us, exiles seek your leading
Tenderly you care for all, carrying and feeding.

(Use ELW No. 335 – Jesus, Keep Me Near the Cross)

Advent 3 – B

Earth’s captives cry, oppressed ones seek,
Refugees flee, heartbroken are weak.
Ashes their food, faint spirit their wield
In ruin and waste is hopelessness sealed.

From age to age your saints proclaim,
Directing eyes to Christ who came
That all may see good things are done
Through God who sent the only son.

Seeds sown with tears will reap with joy
In Christ who comes, our death destroy.
Thanks be our song, God’s praise we bring,
To welcome Christ, of whom we sing.

Spirit anoint me with your pow’r
To speak good news, to those who cow’r.
Through me shine light that all may see
Earth’s life is come, through grace we’re free.

(Sung to ELW 818, O Master, Let Me Walk with Thee)

Advent 4 – B

Reveal to me, O God of Love
Each promise made in heaven above,
That peace may fill my troubled heart
Knowing you’ll ne’er depart.

In sin we clutch and wield our power
With bricks of greed we build our tower
Come to us, Lord, and bring us low
Your reign on earth to sow.

Angels descend, from your blest throne,
With grace and call, in Christ, we own.
Then magnifies each soul you bless,
And utters faith’s bold “yes.”

With favor you have cast your light,
Each one is blesséd in your sight,
Strong is your arm, your mercy pure,
Justice in you is sure.

(Sung to ELW #714   O God of Mercy, God of Light)
